Short answer
The main exhibition, “Kohtaaminen Jäämeren kans – Møtet med Ishavet” (Meeting the Arctic Ocean), is about Kven and Norwegian-Finnish immigration to Varanger. The museum also runs historic sites around the municipality, including Tuomainengården, Esbensengården, Bietilægården, Vadsøya Culture Park and Kjeldsenbruket on Ekkerøy. The museum is the Vadsø branch of Varanger museum IKS, which also runs the Borderland Museum (Grenselandmuseet) in Kirkenes and Vardø museum. The main building at Grensen 1 reopened in autumn 2021 as the national museum for the Kven and Norwegian-Finnish people, a few minutes’ walk from the town centre.
As well as the main exhibition, there is an exhibition about NRK Finnmark and the broadcasting history linked to Vadsø. The combined ticket gives access to all the museum’s sites in Vadsø.
In summer 2026 (22 June–9 August) the museum was open every day 10:00–17:00. The rest of the year it is open Monday–Friday 10:00–15:00 and Sunday 12:00–15:00. Adults pay NOK 120, and children under 16 get in free. A combined ticket to all the sites in Vadsø costs NOK 150.
