With heart for Vadsø
Truls Bernhardsen on life in Vadsø: work, hunting and community
Truls Bernhardsen · Fisherman with his own boat

Vadsø, a gem in northern Norway set beautifully on the Varangerfjord, has a rich history and cultural heritage. To get a broad picture of what Vadsø means to the people who live here, we have interviewed a range of people of different ages who have a connection to this charming town. Each of them has their own experiences and views, and together they give us a glimpse of Vadsø as seen by different generations. We spoke to Truls Bernhardsen to get his view of our town.
About Truls
Truls Bernhardsen (19) is a fisherman. In his spare time he spends a lot of time hunting and fishing. Otherwise he fills his time with friends and family. Truls lives in Kariel, in Vadsø Municipality. He was born and raised in Kariel and is very happy there. Truls lived in Honningsvåg for a year, where he trained as a deckhand. After a year in Honningsvåg, he returned to Kariel. He has no plans to move away from Kariel, the village he is so fond of.
Everyday life in Vadsø
Everyday life for Truls is mostly about work. He bought his own boat when he was just 15. He fishes from his own boat, which he really enjoys. When autumn comes, he joins his hunting team for the elk hunt. As well as hunting and fishing, Truls spends a lot of time with family and friends – something he makes a real priority.
The best thing about Vadsø
We asked Truls what he thinks is the best thing about Vadsø. He answered: “It’s nice in Vadsø. There are loads of nice people here. This is where I’m happiest, and where I was born and raised.”
He goes on: “Kariel is the best place in the world. It was nice living away, meeting new people and seeing new places. But I’m happiest at home.”
His job is also a big reason why Truls has chosen to stay in Vadsø: “The job is probably a big part of why I chose to stay here too. It’s easy to choose to stay when I have a job here that I enjoy.”
