Last updated: 8 October 2026

Short answer

Vadsø is in the far north-east of Norway, on the Varangerfjord in East Finnmark. The town is the county capital of Finnmark. The quickest way here is to fly via Kirkenes or Tromsø — see Getting here.

In more detail

Vadsø lies in the middle of the 160-kilometre Varanger National Tourist Route, between Varangerbotn and Hamningberg. The municipality also includes the fishing villages of Ekkerøy and Skallelv and the village of Vestre Jakobselv.

By car it is 173 km from Kirkenes town centre and 74 km from Vardø. Kirkenes has daily direct flights to Oslo, and from there it is a 15-minute flight to Vadsø.
