Things to do and nature

Where and when is the best birdwatching near Vadsø?

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Short answer

Vadsø harbour is among the best places in the world to see Steller’s eider in winter — from December to April you can also see king eider, long-tailed duck and common eider. There are bird hides on the breakwater in Vadsø harbour, in Vestre Jakobselv and on Ekkerøy, by the bird cliff. See Birdwatching in Vadsø.

In the woods around Vadsø you will find songbirds such as Arctic redpoll, bullfinch and bluethroat, especially at the feeding stations.

A day trip away, off Vardø, is the bird cliff of Hornøya with puffins, guillemots and kittiwakes. Boat trips run there from Vardø harbour from February to August. Much of the birdlife is in or near Varangerhalvøya National Park — check their rules before you go.
