What happened to Vadsø during the Second World War?

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Short answer

Vadsø town centre was completely destroyed by Allied bombing in August 1944, and the old wooden church was bombed on the night of 28–29 October that year. The centre was rebuilt in the early 1950s, and the church, the town hall and Statens hus are typical post-war reconstruction architecture. See the town centre on the culture trail.

In more detail

The new Vadsø Church was designed by architect Magnus Poulsson and consecrated in 1958. He called it the Arctic Ocean Cathedral (Ishavskirken), because the door stands between two tall, pointed towers that look like icebergs. On Vadsøya you will also find war memorials from 1944 — see Vadsøya on the culture trail.
