How do I get to Vadsø?

The quickest way is to fly: Widerøe flies to Vadsø Airport, including direct flights of 15 minutes from Kirkenes, and from Tromsø. From Oslo, the easiest route is to fly to Kirkenes or Tromsø and continue with Widerøe. You can also come by car along the E75, by bus 150 or on Hurtigruten heading north. See Getting here.

Fly with SAS or Norwegian direct from Oslo to Kirkenes, Tromsø or Alta, and continue with Widerøe to Vadsø. The easiest is via Kirkenes or Tromsø: from Kirkenes the flight takes 15 minutes, and there are around two flights a day each way. See Getting here.

Vadsø Airport (VDS) is at Kiby, about 4 km east of the town centre. Widerøe is the airline that flies here — see flight times at Avinor. From the airport you can take Vadsø Taxi, which drives both in town and to the airport, bus 150 or a hire car. See Getting here.

From Kirkenes town centre it is 173 km, about 2 hours 40 minutes in summer. From Vardø it is 74 km, about 1 hour 10 minutes. In winter it takes longer, and in bad weather the roads may have convoy driving or be closed. See Getting here.

Is it safe to drive in Finnmark in winter?

It is fine with good planning, but snow, ice and the polar night mean lower speeds, and in bad weather the roads may have convoy driving or be closed. Does Hurtigruten or Havila stop in Vadsø?

Yes, but only heading north. Hurtigruten calls at Vadsø early in the morning, around 07:00 in the autumn 2026 timetable, on its way to Kirkenes, and all of Havila’s northbound voyages to Kirkenes call at Vadsø. Heading south, the ships go straight from Kirkenes to Vardø. See Getting here.

Is there a bus to Vadsø?

Yes. Route 150, Varangerexpressen, runs between Kirkenes and Vardø via Kirkenes Airport, Varangerbotn and Vadsø, with no change. Tickets are sold by Snelandia. See departures and journey times on Getting here.
